The Lake District, Cumbria
In this section we include books about many aspects of the Lake District, which is located in the far northwest of England. It is now, since 1974, entirely contained within the 'new' county of Cumbria. Pre-1974 it was partly in Cumberland and partly in Westmorland, while the southern lakes including Windermere and Coniston Water were in Lancashire. Much of it is within the boundaries of the Lake District National Park.
The Lake District can be enjoyed at many levels. It is a splendid setting for energetic sports such as climbing and canoeing. Lake District walking can take in the heights of the mountains or leisurely strolls on the lower fellsides and along the margins of the lakes and streams. We have a separate section focusing solely on Lake District Walking.
